Young people’s views about hotspot policing

Young people across Greater Manchester took part in research exploring their views of, and experiences with, the police in areas categorised as crime ‘hot spots’. Their views will inform Greater Manchester Police’s strategy.

70 young people took part in three participatory workshops exploring their views of hot spot policing and developing recommendations for GMP. Many of them shared some extremely challenging experiences with the police and wider services. Inspired by protest art, they made their recommendations through protest banners, some of which were collated into a leaflet for young people to share with adults (image). Their messages were for GMP to:

  • ‘Stop stereotyping us and actually listen to us’
  • Develop trust with communities
  • Stop police racism and improve cultural awareness, and redistribute police funds to other local services
